Wedding Songs, Advice from a Birmingham Wedding Venue Owner: Garter Toss

Garter Toss

While preparing this blog, I started to wonder…..

Woodrow Hall was built almost a century ago and has been the social center in East Birmingham ever since. With it’s large ballroom and beautiful architecture, it has been a magnet for celebrations! So…How many Woodrow Hall wedding receptions have occurred? How many couples have been blessed? How many garters have been thrown over the shoulder of a newly married groom? There is no way to know, but since the restoration several years ago, we have been hosting a wedding almost every week!

The garter removal and toss is one of the last events at the wedding reception. This can be one of the most humorous traditions at any wedding reception. But it can also be a bit edgy or quite risqué. So, plan appropriately and get your husband to agree on how far he will go for the garter. This should be a predetermined decision! Brides, if you are a bit concerned about this, simply lower your garter to an area below your knee before this event occurs. Your husband may be a bit disappointed, but…he will get over it! Grooms, this event can have repercussions during the honeymoon… don’t let your hormones get the best of you!

Some weddings have the man place the just-caught garter on the leg of the lady who caught the bouquet. If you do not wish this to happen, make sure your Master of Ceremonies (the band or DJ) know ahead of time. This can be quite embarrassing to the young lady as some men have been known to get a bit carried away! Some couples “cheat” and actually set up the lucky couple. If this is done, make sure they know about here to stand ahead of time.

The garter toss tradition has its roots in the belief that the bride’s wardrobe on her wedding day brought good luck. Another traditional belief states that the young man catching the garter is the next to get married. No matter what your beliefs, this activity demands music!

You can pick two different songs for this part of the wedding reception, one song for the removal and another for the actual toss.
